Glacier National Park is well known as a hiker's paradise, but accessible options for those of varying abilities beyond the developed areas of the park are limited. In 2023, the Glacier National Park Conservancy has committed to funding year 8 of a 10 year long trail project, in partnership with Glacier National Park and the Montana Conservation Corps, to increase accessibility on the 2.5 mile Swiftcurrent Nature Trail in Many Glacier.

So far, over 11,000 feet of the trail has been resurfaced using a natural paving material, keeping sustainability, durability, and longevity in mind. Materials must be hand-carted or packed in by livestock, and given seasonal constraints, trail crews are limited to a short window of work each year. The goal is for the full 2.5 mile loop trail to be fully ABA compliant upon the completion of the project, allowing people of all abilities to experience a stroll through Glacier National Park with stunning views of Swiftcurrent Lake and the surrounding peaks of the Many Glacier area - and maybe even a glimpse of some of Glacier's iconic wildlife.

The Glacier National Park Conservancy is the official nonprofit fundraising partner of Glacier National Park, and provides support for vital park projects and programs to preserve and protect Glacier for future generations. The Glacier Conservancy's mission is made possible by donor support. Learn more at glacier.org
